A Lesson in Shopping

Jul 16, 2024

Dressing for a summer wedding in the UK can be a challenging task – with dress codes, locations, unpredictable weather and a multitude of fits to consider, the prospect of selecting a flattering piece can often take the exciting build up out of the upcoming occasion. At the beginning of your search, we believe the following questions should be asked to compartmentalise and help you understand the direction in which you should go.

  1. Is there a dress code? The dress code is the most important factor to take into consideration when choosing what to wear to a wedding. The majority of couples will set a wedding dress code depending on the style of the event, as well as the time of year it is taking place. What you wear to a black-tie winter wedding, for example, will be very different than what you wear to a casual wedding in summer.
  1. What colour are the bridesmaids wearing? It is considered polite to avoid matching with the wedding party. For example, if the bridesmaids will be in mint green, we advise selecting a dark green or olive to provide enough distinction.
  1. What season and location is the wedding set? Our dresses are designed to provide comfort for the season they are intended. For example, the lighter fabrics for summer and longer sleeves in winter consider the practical elements of wearing the garment while aesthetics such as tone and print resonate with particular times of year. Although not definitive, we often think pale blues for spring, bright pinks for summer and forest greens for winter.
  1. Do I want to style with existing accessories or buy an entire look? This helps you decide if the dress search is dependant on matching existing footwear, bag and jewellery or if you have the freedom to choose the dress first and style around your new piece accordingly.
  1. What style of clothes do I feel comfortable in? Understanding what you already like and don’t like in regards to dress silhouettes, colours and lengths is of course very helpful when selecting a new piece. Whether it be midi-lengths, off-the-shoulder necklines, illusion panelling, in-built waist belts – any design elements you have previously found flattering can make choosing your new piece much easier.
